There has been much speculation lately about the future of enterprise agreements.
Before we abolish enterprise agreements let’s draw breath and consider the consequences.
Enterprise agreements when used to facilitate and enhance flexibility, high performance and positive culture have achieved their purpose. The recent trend calling for the abolition of enterprise bargaining reflects poor negotiating skills, lack of imagination and creativity. It is not possible to legislate a path to high performance or engagement.
What is proposed to replace enterprise agreements? If it is a set of minimum rigid and restricted conditions, we once again race to achieve mediocrity. One size does not fit all!
The best enterprise agreements have not created positive workplace outcomes. The best enterprise agreements reflect and facilitate existing positive workplace relations. Minimum standards are necessary for those who do not have the commitment or insight to treat people (their employees) as intelligent contributors.
Let’s be careful to ensure the minimum standards do not overreach and prevent better outcomes being recognised.
The best workplace cultures I’ve helped to develop are reflected in employee statements such as “hard to get into, harder to leave”. Note, these company have paid rates that are above the minimum however often less than those of their major local competitors. These companies also have the hallmark of being customer centric, profitable and successful.
