Reflection
Reflection assists in organisational development by allowing critical examination of individual and organisational problems and solutions resulting in alignment of purpose.
Organisational Development
Often in the practice of human resources it feels like we are managing an inherent tension between the needs and desires of individual employees and those of the organisation. Reflection which allows for critical analysis provides individuals the space to challenge group think and sometimes old paradigms so that better processes and results can be achieved.
Most managers are expected to be a combination of technical expert, leader, keeper of the values and human resource expert. This daunting task can understandably result in the misalignment of objectives and quite often leads to perceptions of incompetence when it comes to people management. Critical reflection and the adoption of a joint approach to solving work challenges results in organisational co-operation and alignment.
This is achieved by adopting sound practices such as ensuring the company’s vision, mission and action plans are shared and cascaded to individuals through smart (specific, measurable, agreed, realistic, time bound) objectives, goals and actions. Feedback from individuals in regard to progress, methodology and fundamental processes should be encouraged as should collaboration on problem solving regardless of status, position and experience. It is this diversity which results in better questions being asked and better quality solutiuons being adopted.
If your organisation has a culture which sometimes exhibits oppositional or dysfunctional behaviour, it may be time to commence a transformation. Whilst evoking action-taking, transformation begins with reflection to develop and evolve a strategy. No doubt implemntaion will and should take ninety-five percent of the effort, however critical reflection, facilitated in a safe environment, results in the alignment of individuals to a common purpose and goals. This in turn, with good continuous feedback, will provide organisational effectiveness and can transform your culture to create a high performing purposeful business.
